Capital of the Sahel, located on the Gulf of Hammamet, 160 km from Tunis, Sousse is a city in which both industry and tourism play a very important role in the Tunisian economy.
Sousse is known by its port El Kantaoui (seaside town) and its hotels that welcome thousands of tourists per year, but also by its Arab city built since the first Arab Muslim conquests, whose architecture reflects the military role of Sousse. Thus, its ribat, its lighthouse and its mosque were built in a sober style without any ornamentation.
The medina of Sousse is registered since 1988 as World Heritage by UNESCO.
